I stumble away from Bea, and my heart hurts to turn my back on her. I’ll make this right. I’ll fix it all.

Somehow.

Kyvain’s limp body is left behind. Honestly, he can’t be any worse off than he is with us kicking him in his obnoxious face every few hours. Needless to say, I don’t think of him once after we walk away.

A sharp hiss stings the air, and my protective Hell cat comes closer to my side when a man with a bent road sign swings out close to me just to pummel another man to the dirt.

“That’s what you get for saying hi to my wife every morning!” he roars as he brings the street sign down once more with a clanging bang.

“I was your mail carrier, Jim. I said hello to everyone,” the bloody-faced man explains.

Aric’s big hand wraps around the metal post, and he jerks the makeshift weapon away from Jim. It’s tossed to the ground, and Jim sets his blazing sights on my dragon instantly for interrupting him.

“That’s enough,” Aric says calmly.

But it’s not enough. Every muscle beneath the man’s dirty white shirt tenses as he turns fully to the three men of Hell who surround me.

But this is my fight. All of this is.

And I have to fix it. Now.

I push past Latham and Torben, and I make my way to the very front to look up at the crazed man who just beat a postal worker for no damn reason.

How the fuck do I fix this?

I think about the power inside of me. I even lift my hand and place it gently against his wrist. Anxiety for what I’ve caused swirls through my chest. Pain and guilt run rampant, and it all just clouds my thoughts as well as my magic. I just keep trying though. Everything’s going to be okay. It will be. It has to be.

A big hand shoves to my chest. The suddenness of it throws me off balance and into Torben as Jim stares at me like I’m the biggest idiot he’s ever had to look at.

“Take your weird little girlfriend and get the hell outta my sight!”

Latham’s entire posture changes as he squares his shoulders and takes a solid step closer to the man. Aric picks up the battered road sign from the dirt, and everything feels even more out of control and chaotic.

“Stop! Stop it!” I grab Latham’s arm and pull the metal sign from Aric’s grip before these two Hell shifters beat this man to death with a Lover’s Lane street sign. “We’re supposed to be helping!” I shove my hands through my hair and storm off away from the mess of this screwed-up place.

I need to calm down. I need to channel my magic.

Through the throng of screaming and fighting and fire, I find myself face to face with the shattered glass door of Dark Moon Community College. It has been ransacked. A chair and forgotten papers lie in the empty hallway. I step through the jagged glass frame, and a bitter smile touches my lips.
